Since we’re now living in the age of delivery/carry out as the primary option for treating ourselves, I want to offer you 14 restaurants to try right here in Hampton Roads. Let’s all shop local and enjoy a little night off from cooking. Consider this your guide to enjoying a date-night at home.
1. Blue Seafood & Spirits in Virginia Beach
Let’s give a big shoutout to Blue! Not only do they take the #1 rank in Yelp’s top 50 list for Hampton Roads, they were actually one of our sponsors for our Valentine’s Giveaway last year. If you decide to get some food delivered, check out their award-winning crab soup. It’s a perfect way to warm up a cold night.
2. Bilu’s Columbian in Norfolk
This one is a favorite with me and my hubby. The food is delicious and they have those nice large “healthy portions” that we love. If you choose Bilu’s you owe it to yourself to try the beef empanadas. They are delicious and I’ve made a full meal out of just having them. Yum!
3. Pier 88 in Hampton and Chesapeake
One of the things I miss most about living in Texas is when my brother would do crawfish boils. And…nobody, I mean NOBODY can do it quite like him. You would never believe all the things we throw in that boil. The options are endless. Even so, Pier 88 has a bomb take on a seafood boil. My favorite is the Combo 1 – Extra Hot. This meal has actually been known to make me block out everything else happening around me just to focus on the food.
4. Tamarind in Norfolk
Tamarind sells Indian street food and they have a large selection of foods that are Gluten-free. Not all options are GF, but they can easily point out which ones are. I’ve been here several times. The price is fair and the food is amazing. I’ve not had a single item I haven’t enjoyed. But, if you’re not sure where to start, try their Butter Chicken and maybe grab some Samosa Chaat as well. Yummmm!
5. Food for Thought in Williamsburg
I LOVE Food for Thought. It’s actually one of the places I love to send couples for a relationship refresher because their restaurant is simply delightful and a great place for solid conversation. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with anything you order here. And, if you want a way to have some fun conversations, check out their conversation starter deck on their resources page.
6. Istanbul in Norfolk
Alright you’re not going to find a website for this Turkish fare, but don’t let that deter you. They may just have the best lamb gyros I’ve ever had. I’m not exaggerating. And, my husband (who has had his fair share of gyros) says the same. But don’t just take my word for it – go try them out!
7. Luna Maya in Norfolk
So, this is one I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting myself, but I’m in a group on Facebook all about Hampton Roads dining, and this one is all the rage in one of the threads. It’s a family-owned Brazilian restaurant that has won several press rewards. They also have some pretty outstanding customer reviews.
8. East Side Pizza in Portsmouth
This is another I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting yet, but they also have some rave reviews on their food and on their customer service. Check out their menu because it definitely goes beyond just offering pizza. There are several pasta dishes and salad options as well.
9. Taste – several locations throughout Hampton Roads
Taste has sandwiches, soups, salads, and family meals to choose from. They have a pretty large menu and the order and pick-up process is pretty simple. If you like a small dessert with your meal, they have plenty of options for you.
10. The Grey Goose in Hampton
The Grey Goose is owned by a husband and wife team and both of them are chefs! They have brunch, lunch, and dinner menus so browse online to see which entrees you’d like to try. They offer family style meals as well and a host of delectable desserts.
11. Viking Burger in Newport News
Okay seriously, why would you NOT try a place called Viking Burger? I don’t travel much to Newport News, but based on the almost 1600 positive reviews on Google, Viking Burger looks like an amazing establishment. And, people in the Hampton Roads Facebook group have said that you can get the best burger in Hampton Roads here. I plan on making a trip to try the Angry Odin and Viking Fries. Oh yes!
12. Hair of the Dog in Virginia Beach and Norfolk
There are a few locations to choose from with Hair of the Dog. They have several really good items, but I’m a big fan of the “traditionally breakfast” eggs Benedict in any style. They always do it right which is so important when it comes to an eggs bennie. But, they also offer several other options and I know from friends that their lunch menu is bomb!
13. The Coffee Shoppe in Portsmouth
I fully believe that an at home date doesn’t just have to occur at night. So, let me introduce you to The Coffee Shoppe. They have coffee (of course!), desserts and sandwiches and soup. They’re perfect for a breakfast, lunch, or brunch option. Not only that, but The Coffee Shoppe made a donation of a large coffee basket for our Giveaway last year and they’ve contributed again this year. They always have some yummy holiday-themed drinks, so make sure to check those out.
14. 17 Hands Coffee/Robin Simmons Bakery in Chesapeake
This is one of my favorite “close to home” coffee shops. Robin is an incredible baker and offers several items that are GF and Keto-friendly. You can buy cakes and pies by the slice or whole, scones, and quiche. The items are fresh which means the menu rotates, but if you’re lucky enough to find apple pie of carrot cake when you go you’ve just got to try! That, or her cheesecake which has won awards. Yum!
Your turn! What Hampton Roads restaurants would you add to this list?
